"They broke open the door, started beating me and my father. They caught hold of us by the hair, dragged and threw us on the road. They stripped me naked and would have raped me if not our maid who took me to a distance and gave a skirt and a top to wear," said 30 years old daughter of retired scientist.
Aparesh Bhattacharya, 60, and his daughter, residents of Baruipur in South 24 Parganas - 40 km from Kolkata, alleged that on Sunday afternoon, about 30 youth from a nearby club broke into their rented apartment, thrashed them and allegedly stripped her naked.
The woman, a law graduate, and her father rented Pal's first-floor apartment in Mullickpur, South 24-Parganas, in February this year after Bhattacharya retired from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.
In the month of February, Bhattacharjee had approached Pal to purchase the house and paid Rs 2 lakh as advance. But later in March, Bhattacharjee reportedly informed Pal that he will not buy the house as the paper concerning the property had problems. Pal also told him that he will not sell the house and began mounting pressure on the retired scientist to vacate the house.
Organisations working for empowering women should help the daughter to make a ‘voice for justice’. I do believe, ‘we should value our scientists’.
