Nowadays where one has no time to cook food ready to eat food is produced on large extent. We like to eat ready-to-eat food like bakery products etc.
The bakery industry is the largest among the processed food industries in India. Its production is increasing day by day. It occupies an important place with an annual turnover of about Rs. 3000 crores. The packaging of bakery products is closely interlinked with production, preservation, storage, transportation, and marketing.
It mainly performs three functions viz. to contain, to protect and to sell the product.
The cake and pastry market is the fast growing market with volume growth of 16%. India’s bakery market is the third largest market in Asia Pacific.
But if food is unsafe for consuming then the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 punishes the offender with punishment. Section 59 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Section-59 speaks of Punishment for unsafe food=
Any person who, whether by himself or by any other person on his behalf, manufactures for sale or stores or sells or distributes or imports any article of food for human consumption which is unsafe, shall be punishable,–
(i) where such failure or contravention does not result in injury, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months and also with fine which may extend to one lakh rupees;
(ii) where such failure or contravention results in a non-grievous injury, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year and also with fine which may extend to three lakh rupees;
(iii) where such failure or contravention results in a grievous injury, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six years and also with fine which may extend to five lakh rupees;
(iv) where such failure or contravention results in death, with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than seven years but which may extend to imprisonment for life and also with fine which shall not be less than ten lakh Rupees.
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 has taken place of Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 and has come up with stricter punishments. It consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments.
Hope the Snake-Cake manufacturer gets stricter punishment for carelessness in manufacturing the same.
